New (and Old) Volunteer Opportunities
Van Buren Dr Shelter
Central Ohio United Non-Theists (COUNT) and the Humanist Community of Central Ohio (HCCO), both Gold/level 3 teams for 2016, 2017 and 2018, and the Secular Student Alliance (SSA) at The Ohio State University (OSU), 2017 Heart of Humanism Campus All-Star Award winner, have together worked 898 hours at the Van Buren Dr. homeless shelter since January 2015.
On the second or third Tuesday of each month volunteers help serve dinner and clean-up. 83 participants from Columbus CoR groups have worked at 43 events held January, 2015 through August, 2018. 17 have worked there at least five times and have been designated as “Handful” volunteers. RSVP with HCCO or COUNT for the September 11th (2nd Tuesday), October 16th (3rd Tuesday), November 13 (2nd Tuesday), and December 18 (3rd Tuesday) events. Omnipresent Atheists (OA) welcomes volunteers afterwards for socializing at their regular Tuesday meeting currently at King Avenue 5 (945 King Ave).
COUNT is now working at Van Buren on 4th Sundays with the Care & Share Time Bank (CSTB) and Interfaith Association of Central Ohio (IACO) as a pilot effort to guage interest in weekend volunteering. RSVP for September 23rd or October 28th
All Columbus CoR member groups are invited to participate in Third Thursday events every other month. Blood donation at the Red Cross is followed by dinner at a local restaurant. COUNT collects and reports results to Foundation Beyond Belief to publicize non-theist charitable efforts and improve the reputations of humanists and atheists. Sixty-five life-saving units were collected from 13 Columbus CoR donors from January 2017 to date.
RSVP with HCCO or COUNT for September 20th and/or November 15th. Note: If you donate on a different day, please RSVP on Meetup and add a note stating the date and number of units and we will include your donation in our report.

HCCO Winter Solstice Celebration
HCCO has scheduled their annual Winter Solstice Celebration for Saturday, December 8th, 2018 starting at 6:00 PM at the Blacklick Woods Golf Course Banquet Room.
The Winter Solstice – also known as The Longest Night, Midwinter, Yule, and Jol – is a day that human beings across the globe have been celebrating since the stone age over 15,000 years ago. It represents the shortest period of sunlight in a single day for the whole year, and in turn, the longest period of darkness.
The winter months to follow were typically difficult for early peoples. In fact, they came to be known as “the famine months.” Today of course, winters aren’t so hard on our stomachs–quite the opposite for many of us! But our human need for community, connection, and celebration has not changed. And so we are excited to announce that we will once again be hosting our annual Winter Solstice Banquet and we’d love it if you joined us.
