Spring is finally in the air and great events are popping up!
Madalyn Murray O'Hair 1919 – 1995
The Toledo-based Great Lakes Atheists (GLA) invites us all to celebrate Madalyn Murray O'Hair's birthday April 13 at 1:30 PM at the Rossford Public Library. Ms. O'Hair, a founder of American Atheists, "spent some high school years in Rossford," according to Barbara Williams, Event Host, in a recent Toledo Blade article. According to Wikipedia, "She is best known for the Murray v. Curlett lawsuit, which led to a landmark Supreme Court ruling ending official Bible-reading in American public schools in 1963."
Week of Action
Beyond Belief Network (BBN) has declared April 24 – 30 as a Week of Action:
Week of Action takes place the week before National Day of Prayer and Reason, and is a way to come together regardless of beliefs to benefit our communities. Whether you spend May 1, 2014 praying or reasoning, spend the last week of April acting.
Two Columbus Coalition of Reason (CoR) groups are affiliated with BBN and have planned events.
The Humanist Community of Central Ohio (HCCO) is building on periodic Bleed & Feed Red Cross donation events and a successful on-site Holiday Blood Drive last December with a Week of Action Blood Drive on Thursday, April 23, from 2 – 8 PM. Any Columbus CoR group member is welcome to sign up online to donate at the HCCO office at 1550 Old Henderson Road in Columbus.
Central Ohio United Non-Theists (COUNT) is hosting a Week of Action Bowling Party & Food Collection Friday, April 25, 7 – 10 PM and invites all Columbus CoR group members to signup to bowl and bring canned goods that will be donated to the Mid Ohio Foodbank. Atheists of Columbus (AoC) has graciously relocated their usual Friday night meetup from German Village to Ten Pin Alley (Hilliard) so that members can participate.
COUNT is also particpating in the Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed (FLOW) Big Spring tree planting on Saturday, April 26 at 9 AM. A picnic lunch will follow the tree planting and COUNT invites other Columbus CoR group members to plant and picnic with them. See the COUNT Meetup event for details about this Week of Action event.
National Day of Reason
Thursday, May 1st, 2014 is a day when all Americans can come together to celebrate rational thinking. Anyone can take part in this inclusive day, regardless of their worldview. It came about as a counter-protest to the National Day of Prayer and has been celebrated since 2003. President Obama is again expected to issue a national proclamation and Columbus CoR is leading the effort to request proclamations from the State of Ohio (with Secular Coalition for Ohio), Franklin County and City of Columbus. Secular groups will be using common slogans and graphics in events held across the US. Local involvement is displayed on the National Day of Reason Map with other Ohio groups.
The Cleveland Freethinkers (CF) have planned their 4th annual National Day of Reason and Apostasy (and Prayer 🙂 for May 1 from 10 AM – 2 PM in the Cleveland Public Square. Participants will protest the government endorsing a National Day of Prayer by displaying signs. "And once again, the handling of NDP events nationwide has been left to the exclusively conservative Christian National Day of Prayer Task Force. In order for any NDP observance to be registered, the registrant must affirm allegiance to the God of the Bible and Jesus Christ." according to the event on Meetup.com.
Columbus CoR groups are planning a picnic on the following Saturday, May 3 from 1 – 4 PM. "We hope to bring many people together from the community to celebrate reason and have a good time while doing it." says Avery Winston, Coordinator. Details will be published in a later news story.
Great Lakes Atheists is a friend of Columbus CoR. Cleveland Freethinkers is a member of Northeast Ohio CoR. The Humanist Community of Central Ohio, Central Ohio United Non-Theists and Atheists of Columbus are members of Columbus CoR.
