Season of Reason: Fall 2015

Flying Spaghetti Monster Benefit Dinner Ad

Lots of opportunities to “Do good without God”.

1st Sundays with COUNT at Ronald McDonald House

The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with hospitalized children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. Central Ohio United Non-Theists (COUNT) has been volunteering there since May 2013 and 10 COUNT volunteers have worked more than 600 hours there. Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 – 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience.
Those interested can arrange a time to try this out by “shadowing” a COUNT volunteer by calling Dave Nohle at 614-268-9558. RSVP for October 4th, November 1st or December 6th.

2nd Tuesdays at Van Buren Dr Homeless Shelter with COUNT (and OA)

COUNT is serving meals at the Van Buren Drive shelter on the 2nd Tuesday of every month and has had 10 successful events already in 2015. Since January when COUNT started working there, two additional dining rooms have opened in the facility, increasing the number of volunteer slots available. Shifts are from 5:30 – 8:00 PM (repeat volunteers can start at 6:00). As of April, event host Christina McDuffie arranged to reserve the entire shift for COUNT volunteers on 2nd Tuesdays. 28 Columbus CoR volunteers have worked a total of 151 hours so far. After 8 PM, volunteers often join the Omnipresent Atheists (OA) meeting for dinner, drinks and conversation. RSVP soon for October 13th, November 10th or December 8th and join the team!

4th Annual Flying Spaghetti Monster Benefit Dinner

Come help us feed hungry people in Central Ohio at the 4th annual Flying Spaghetti Monster Benefit Dinner on Thursday, November 5, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:30 PM. The event features a spaghetti dinner (serving until 8:00), bake sale, silent auction, raffle and entertainment to raise money and collect food donations for the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. An adult dinner is $10 ($5 for youngsters ages 14 and under). Cash and checks are accepted and carry out will also be available.
Columbus CoR groups hold this event at the First Unitarian Universalist (UU) Church in Clintonville (93 West Weisheimer Road). The UU Atheists, Skeptics and Humanists (ASH) group provides the venue and tied with Atheists of Columbus (AoC) in providing the most volunteer workers last year. Area non-theists have collected a total of 911 lbs of food and $6,616.77 for the Mid-Ohio Foodbank from 2012 – 2014 at the prior three benefits (and another event).
Volunteers from all Columbus CoR groups are needed in advance of the event, during and following the event. COUNT will do project management and wrap-up activities and is recruiting three servers to work from 6:00 – 7:00 PM and three more from 7:00 – 8:00 PM. RSVP and contact Avery Winston to volunteer at [email protected].
If you can’t volunteer or attend, you can still help by donating towards ingredients. More information is available at
