The Sacramento Coalition of Reason is proud to announce its support for Leukemia & Lymphoma and their Light the Night Walk, happening on October 27, 2012, at 5:30 PM, at the State Capitol’s west steps.
To fight leukemia and lymphoma, we are working with the Foundation Beyond Belief and the freethought movement around the world to raise one million dollars in 2012 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).
What You Can Do
All walkers are encouraged to raising $100 or more to help fight blood cancer. Walkers located in the US or Canada who raise $100 or more will receive night of walk benefits including:
- Light The Night t-shirt
- Light The Night balloon
- Wristband which entitles the walker to food and refreshments
About the Walk
The Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s evening walk and fundraising event to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer. Thousands of participants raise funds for vital, lifesaving research and patient services and, on these special nights, they carry illuminated balloons in a show of support from a caring community.
Honoring Christopher Hitchens
The Foundation Beyond Belief has chosen Christopher Hitchens as our Honored Hero for 2012. Hitch died from complications due to esophageal cancer this past year and devoted so much to our movement during his life; now we can give something back in his memory. Although he did not have a blood cancer, drugs developed for blood cancers are often used to treat other cancers as well. As a result, the research that is funded by LLS could very well help treat esophageal and other cancers.
About the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society funds lifesaving research that has contributed to major advances in the treatment of blood cancers and treatments for other types of cancer, such as chemotherapy and stem cell transplants. New targeted therapies that kill cancer cells without harming normal tissue are providing drugs and procedures that are improving quality of life.
Bonus: Special Matching Gifts
Partnered with the Foundation Beyond Belief, your donations are doubled! The Stiefel family has pledged to match the first $500,000 we raise for LLS!
As an extra incentive for groups to get involved, the top fundraising teams will have the opportunity to direct up to $5,000 in grants with up to half going to a local qualifying freethought nonprofit and the rest to qualifying FBB Allies of their choice, courtesy of the Stiefel Freethought Foundation.
