Des Moines Atheist Group’s Bus Ads Censored

(Des Moines, IA, August 6, 2009) After being displayed for only three days, advertisements run by the Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers, a Des Moines atheist group, asking “Don’t believe in God? You are not alone” have been pulled from buses run by the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART).

United CoR, which provided Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers with the advertisements, is disappointed by this act of censorship. Though the Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers signed a contract to run the ads during the month of August, DART pulled them, citing various reasons, including the number of complaints that they had received as well as claiming that the ads were rejected at the last minute and should not have been put up in the first place.

The legality of DART’s actions is questionable. United CoR is assisting the Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers with finding legal representation.
