COUNT and HCCO exceed 500 hours at shelter.

Foundation Beyond Belief (FBB) has recognized the Humanist Community of Central Ohio (HCCO) as a Level 3/Gold team for 2016. “You are at the pinnacle of BBN’s service expectations. We are so thrilled with the exemplary work your team is doing. Not only are you helping your community, you are reminding people of all the good we can do when we focus on actions rather than beliefs.” says Wendy Webber, BBN Coordinator.

HCCO is one of only ten of 119 Beyond Belief Network (BBN) teams to have reached this milestone in 2016. Central Ohio United Non-Theists (COUNT) and Tri-State Freethinkers are among the other 2016 Gold teams. Two teams currently have Silver and four have Bronze status. Mid-Ohio Atheists (MOA) and Secular Student Alliance (SSA) at the Ohio State University (OSU) are also Columbus CoR BBN teams.

HCCO received level 3/Gold status for holding more than 12 service events this year. Last year, HCCO was awarded a Heart of Humanism award for 2014 along with COUNT and Freethought Dayton (FD).

HCCO Van Buren Drive homeless shelter events are led by Blair Prusha and Gena Deffenbaugh on 2nd Tuesdays of each month where volunteers serve dinner and cleanup. COUNT and HCCO are continuing to hold joint volunteer events at the shelter with the next scheduled for Tuesday, December 13. Following these events, volunteers often join the Omnipresent Atheists (OA) Tuesday night meeting in progress to unwind. COUNT project leader Mike Bondoc continues to invite other Columbus CoR groups to partner on shelter events. 62 volunteers from Columbus CoR groups have worked 501 hours at 24 shelter events since this project started in January 2015.

This year, in addition to monthly shelter events, HCCO held Bleed-N-Feed events to collect blood products for the Red Cross and donors then go out to dinner afterwards. The next blood donation event will be Wednesday, 11/16. HCCO has previously collected winter-wear items to donate to the Columbus Open Shelter and removed invasive plants at the Park of Roses Prairie in August.

COUNT, HCCO, MOA, SSA at OSU and OA are members of the Columbus Coalition of Reason (CoR). FD is a Friend of Columbus CoR.
