DFW Atheist Organization Shows Families Are Great Without Religion

The Dallas–Fort Worth Coalition of Reason (DFWCoR), an umbrella group supporting grassroots DFW Atheist organization, today launched an advertising campaign that highlights local atheist families. A billboard proclaiming the message “Our Families are Great Without Religion” will run through the month of April on Tom Landry Freeway near Lone Star Park, and pre-show advertisements will be featured at the Green Oaks Movie Tavern in Arlington.

DFWCoR Coordinator Zachary Moore explained that “too often in our culture, the word ‘family’ is code for ‘religion.’ Organizations like ‘Focus on the Family’ and the ‘Family Research Council’ profit from the assumption that families need religion.” In contrast to those religious groups, Moore said that families in the DFWCoR “raise their kids to examine religion critically, not just to be dogmatic atheists. Our parents want to inspire their kids to love knowledge rather than faith.” Photographs of families from the Dallas-Forth Worth secular group will be shown on the campaign billboards and in the movie theater advertisements.

The DFWCoR also promotes activism among DFW atheist high school and college students, supporting local chapters of the Secular Student Alliance (SSA), a national organization helping to organize and unite atheist students around the country. On April 14th, the DFWCoR and SSA will sponsor the North Texas Secular Student Convention at the Frisco campus of Collin College. As many as two hundred students and local atheists are expected to attend to hear Texas and national atheist speakers, as well as a debate on the existence of God.
