About Us
The Fredericksburg Coalition of Reason is made up of secular humanist and skeptic groups working together in the Fredericksburg area. Our twin goals are to foster a sense of community among the like minded and raise public awareness that people who don't believe in a god or gods can be decent citizens who contribute to the larger society.
So, if you are of a secular mind, you aren't alone. Thousands of your friends and neighbors in this area think and feel as you do. And there are local groups that advance your views and welcome your participation! This website will help you find events to attend, activities in which to participate, people with whom to socialize, and groups to join.
After all, like everyone else, we benefit from a supportive community for friendship, learning, social service, and activism. Moreover, atheists and agnostics make up a significant portion of the population, both nationally and globally, outnumbering most religious and other minorities combined. For example, the American Religious Identification Survey reports that 12 percent of Americans are nontheistic. This places us as one of the largest minorities in America. Yet we don't enjoy the benefits of our numbers because we aren't well organized. This coalition is here to change that.
To the traditional religious community we want to say that, although we nontheists are without a belief in the supernatural, we do share the compassionate human values that most people embrace. As hard working, tax-paying, ethical citizens, we care deeply about our families, our communities, our state, our nation, and the world.

Fredericksburg Secular Humanists (FSH)
FSH is the Fredericksburg Virginia chapter of the Washington Area Secular Humanists (WASH). Most of our members consider themselves freethinkers, non-theists, atheists, or agnostics. We welcome individuals who are interested in learning and intellectual explorations, and are willing to accept that not all questions have easy answers.

We’re a social group which meets for dinner and other events.
Our events are designed to promote fellowship and networking among skeptics, critical thinkers, rationalists, non-thesists (doubters, agnotics, atheists), and other like-minded individuals. They provide an opportunity for our members to talk and share ideas in a casual, relaxed, atmosphere. We discuss the issues of the day and whatever else is on our minds. But most of all, we have fun while promoting skepticism, science, and rationality. Skeptics of all political stripes are welcome.

This group is designed for independent thinkers with a focus on reading books that challenge the standard narrative of culture, i.e. concepts that are generally accepted as true by the greater populous, but may not be entirely accurate. We focus on non-fiction, scholarly books that take a critical approach to cultural and technological issues. Every third book, we will switch to fiction that stimulates thinking outside the box. While this group is designated non-theist and affiliated with the local chapter of Drinking Skeptically and the Fredericksburg Secular Humanists, we are not exclusive to non-theists in membership; come with a critical, inquisitive mind, and you are welcome!

Conservative Skeptics Of Fredericksburg (currently inactive)
We’re a new social group for politically conservative skeptics. You're a good match for our group if you:
– Consider yourself a doubter, agnostic, or atheist.
– Didn't vote for Barack Obama in 2008 and won't vote for him in 2012.
– Believe in a strong national defense, small government & less spending, low taxes, & less regulation
– Are comfortable with many Republican or Libertarian ideas.

Fredericksburg Parenting Beyond Belief
This group was started so that members can help each other work through the difficulties and questions of raising children as secular freethinkers in a mainly religious society. You should join if you have questions such as "Is telling my child Santa is real the same as telling them Jesus is real?" or "What do I do when my child wants to go to church or is curious why all his/her friends are going without him/her?"

We're an activities group for non-theists (atheists, agnostics, and those who doubt what religion has to say or are making up their minds). The purpose of our group is to socialize and participate in activities with like-minded individuals but NOT to debate issues.
Our events will include: hiking, rafting, stargazing, cookouts, wine festivals, happy hours, dinners, comedy shows, travel, baseball games, visits to museums, etc. Skeptics of all political stripes are welcome.
