Chico City Council Secular Invocation

*** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ***
 (Chico, California, August 27, 2014)

After two years of discussions and email exchanges, the Butte County Coalition of Reason has been included in the Chico California city council invocation schedule for 2015.

George Gold, Coordinator of the Butte County Coalition of Reason, has been invited to deliver the first ever secular invocation at the Chico City Council meeting of Tuesday, January 6, 2015; 06:30 pm.

In the US Supreme Court ruling in Greece v. Galloway (2014) it became clear that the Court doesn’t share the view that the introduction of religion at the beginning of a government proceeding violates the first amendment. But the Court specifically mentions that no preference may be applied to the people who deliver the invocation; Atheists must be included.

“Over the past two years we have been petitioning the Mayor of Chico to be included in the invocation rotation. On August 26, 2014, we received the official invocation schedule for 2015, and we have been invited to deliver an invocation on three occasions throughout the year,” said Gold. ”Our invocations will be secular.”

The Butte County Coalition of Reason (www.ButteCountyCoR.org) serves as a resource for the public and offers a means for combining the voices of those who hold to a secular, pro-science outlook of life. The Butte County Coalition of reason is an alliance of four community groups, the Atheists of Butte County, Chico Skeptics, the Chico State Secular Student Alliance and the Chico Freethinkers, Agnostics, Nonbelievers & Skeptics.

The United Coalition of Reason (www.UnitedCoR.org) exists to raise the visibility and sense of unity among local groups in the community of reason by providing funding and expertise to help them cooperate toward the goal of raising their public visibility.
