HUMANISM is a rational philosophy informed by science, inspired by art, and motivated by compassion. Affirming the dignity of each human being, it supports liberty and opportunity consonant with social and planetary responsibility. Free of theism and other supernatural beliefs, humanism thus derives the goals of life from human need and interest rather than from theological or ideological abstractions, and asserts that humanity must take responsibility for its own destiny.

"Becoming a Space-faring civilization" Paul Wieland, a NASA veteran of noteworthy experience, will bring to us an insightful response to the challenges posed in our August Forum on the extremes of nature and civilization. Space, called by some "the final frontier" may also be "the key to a sustainable world of abundance." Wieland presents a vision of a secure, sustainable future with abundant energy, resources and opportunities.

Bruce Isaacson will lead a discussion of the ways words and language have been used and abused to justify agendas of the profane.

What is the state of the art for this controversial chapter of freedom of choice that we once called "Death with Dignity"? Around the world, what else is happening at end-of-life for the terminally ill? Paul LaCombe will facilitate this discussion.
